Tower Transit Singapore (TTS) today launched the Student Co-Host programme, a platform for student volunteers to help commuters in need at the Bukit Batok Bus Interchange.

The first batch of 16 student co-hosts from ITE College West’s Higher Nitec in Rapid Transit Engineering were deployed around the bus interchange to help commuters, particularly the elderly, parents with young children and people with disabilities, by offering to perform simple acts of care such as helping to carry bags, pushing wheelchairs, providing directions and supporting the elderly on staircases.

The event was attended by Bukit Batok MP Murali Pillai who joined the students on an induction training around the bus interchange before they were deployed.

To be equipped with basic knowledge to help people with disabilities, the student volunteers had to take the Caring Commuter Champion online training course developed by the Caring SG Commuters committee and SG Enable. They then put their newfound skills to the test at the Public Bus Inclusivity Course (PBIC), a hands-on workshop conducted by TTS.

We hope to raise up a generation of caring commuters who will actively look out for and help their fellow commuter as they travel on public transport. The Student Co-Host programme gives young Singaporeans an opportunity to develop this sense of community and a culture to care for those around them, so that even when they are not co-hosting with us at the interchange, they will look out for others on their commute.

- said Winston Toh, Managing Director of TTS.

The Student Co-Host programme is one of the projects that students of ITE College West can choose as part of their Values in Action programme aimed at nurturing social responsibility among students.

The Student Co-Host programme by TTS aligns with ITE’s mission to develop in our students not just skills and knowledge, but also values, so they can make a positive impact on both industry and society. We’re proud of the spirit that this first batch of 16 students has shown, and we hope they will inspire their school mates to step forward and serve the community through this meaningful programme.

- said Christopher Leow, Deputy Director (Land Transport Engineering) of ITE College West’s School of Engineering.

TTS plans to bring the Student Co-Host programme to the other bus interchanges that it manages and partner nearby schools.
